We had the pleasure of catching up with Richo Novian the Sales and Marketing Manager of Mutt Motorcycles Indonesia, while he establishes a Mutt community in the Southeast Asia region. 

“It all started from a movie poster of ‘The Great Escape’ with Steve McQueen as ‘Hilts’ AND a crazy idea inspired by a visit  to Mutt HQ Birmingham in early 2022... the rest as they say is history.”

Having always been fascinated by British motorcycles the idea was sewn to introduce Mutt Motorcycles to Indonesia. The custom-inspired, retro all British classic motorcycle vibe, is something new and fun to inject into the vibrant existing custom motorcycle culture here in Jakarta.

Like many others who see a Mutt at first glance, I was just amazed at the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and raw appeal that these motorcycles have. As well as what Mutt stands for; freedom, community, rebelliousness, edgy and bespoke approach, Mutt Motorcycles had to be introduced to Indonesia.

Several months after the initial visit to the Mutt HQ in Birmingham. Fast forward to September 2022 newly established “PT. MMI” (Mongrel Motorcycles Indonesia) submitted the first order which arrived just before Christmas 2022, it was the perfect excuse to host a newly opened showroom party. We invited our closest friends and family to see the bikes before the holidays and as I knew we would, we had an amazing response from everyone.

We had just completed the final touches to our showroom, coffee shop, and office space in the heart of South Jakarta. But once the bikes had made themselves at home here, we were in awe. From the Razorback to the Mastiff and the GT-SR. Every bike has its own personality, its own stand-out characteristics and is always undeniably a Mutt. Like a kid in a candy shop, there are gloss tanks, matt tanks, stainless steel exhausts, matt black exhausts to all the Mutt-branded handlebars, vinyl seats, and military-style knobbly tyres. Then it hits us, this is the dream we are going to make a real impact in the motorcycle industry here. It was only a matter of time until we built our own Mutt riding community cruising through the city streets and little alleyways of Jakarta!

As we knew we would, we soon gained a lot of momentum and turned some heads, not just in the local area but globally. It has been great to see the hype, and awareness grow, all while educating the market the Mutt Motorcycles way.

Since we opened our doors visitors love the minimalist, industrial, welcoming vibe of the place. Whether you’re here to get a brew, enjoy a light bite, or of course check out the bikes, the whole space has something for everyone to enjoy - just especially for the motorheads! We have already hosted events; I mean how could we not? We have collaborated with one of the most prominent YouTubers in the custom-motorcycle scene and now we are planning to have a soft-launch to finally introduce our lineup of Mutt Motorcycles to local media across the general, lifestyle and automotive segment. So keep an eye out for that!

Here in Jakarta (also known as the big Durian!) we still wanted to give customers an authentic Brummie experience, by staying true to the Mutt brand identity, serving our own Mutt Coffee and being surrounded by the best street food, pubs, and nightlife South Jakarta has to offer. It’s a perfect match for our casual, laid back, hangout space and we are now a popular meet-up spot for those Sunday morning rides (Sunmori) a motorcycle culture phenomenon that is prevalent in Indonesia, so feel free to book your flights to come and see us.

While it’s still the early stages of Mutt landing on our shores - words spreads damn quick here! The Mutt brand principles, core values & ethos of a thrilling motorcycle ride (while looking damn good on it as well) are alive and well in the streets surrounding our store. Whether you’re new to the motorcycle world and looking into purchasing your first bike or an experienced rider looking to add to your collection, we’ve got you covered.

There can be a negative perception of one-off custom bikes here, they are usually expensive and time-consuming to build, but with the help of Mutt, we can offer a solution for that. Whether you’re someone looking for a bike to match your style or simply looking for a two-wheeler to commute to work, there really is something for everyone at Mutt.

Initially our aim is to establish the brand here in Jakarta. We’d like to expand to other tier-1 cities across Java with a growing demand for custom-style bikes. Places like Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya are in the pipeline and possibly a Mutt Cafe & Resto in Bali. We want to build our own loyal community of Mutt Riders throughout the island of Java, but it all starts at the capital! Touring from one city to another, sharing love, passion and obsession for motorcycles across the country. Promoting this unique blend of contemporary culture and custom heritage to motorcycle enthusiasts and like-minded people is the DREAM!

As Mutt Jakarta continues to grow, we have really become a solid team who, at the end of the day, enjoy what we do. Isn’t that all that matters? We just have to trust the process and let the bikes speak for themselves.
