WARGASM: BACK IN THE DOG HOUSE
If you’ve been following us for a lil while, you’ll know that back in February we had up-and-coming punk icons Wargasm over at HQ to be part of the Carve...
READ THE STORYMeeting riders like Serpa demonstrates the importance of craftsmanship and authenticity in both the ride and the destination.
We knew we would have a lot in common with this super cool human, so some of the Mutt Crew took a trip down to Hackney to spend the day with the Dark Arts rebels and catch up with Serpa and her motorcycle the Mongrel 125cc.
How long have you been riding?
"November marked two years, it's been such a cool journey. I'm just on my CBT at the moment but working to get my full licence soon. Dying to ditch the L plate."
How did you end up with the Mongrel as your first motorcycle?
"I've always gravitated towards brands that feel authentic and steeped in tradition while being able to have this classic timeless edge, Mutt to me really embodies this. The Mongrel is such an effortlessly cool bike, you feel that it's been crafted over time and has all the presence of a big engine which I love. Knew it was the right choice for my first bike."
We hear ya! We pride ourselves on making everyone's entrance to the world of motorcycling a welcome one. Hearing about what that means to a rider - especially when it comes to choosing style over speed makes our hearts sing.
What are the pros of commuting on a Mutt?
"Not gonna lie, London traffic sucks. Being creative, I often need to run out from the studio to pick up a last-minute piece or two to finish up a project, and London traffic usually makes that impossible. Being able to move through London easily on my Mutt is life-changing, gives me so much more freedom. It means I can ultimately spend more time creating and working on my next Mutt collab."
Serpa joined the Dark Arts ride out along the beautiful British A roads from the big smoke to the second city. The monster ride ended up here at Mutt HQ with a load of rad like-minded folk - we talked motors, ate like kings and hung out. That's what the ride-out is all about right?
How was the monster ride to our HQ in Birmingham
"It was a total blast. It was my very first long ride and I had no idea what to expect or how my bike (or body) would handle it. Nothing really lives up to taking the bike out on such a long ride through beautiful landscapes, it's very freeing. I also had the pleasure of riding up with the Dark Arts crew - it was such a wholesome experience, it meant a lot to me as it was my first long ride. And finishing it off at Mutt HQ with the team was a solid way to end the journey."
Is there a destination you would like to go on your mutt, an adventure you are yet to take?
"Euro trip is definitely on the books, should probably upgrade the engine though haha, but for now - lots of little scenic trips in the UK."
What is next for you?
"I just gave up my 9 to 5 to put my energy into my brand. It's been many years living in London that I've been postponing this so I'm really excited for what's coming up. I come from a family of shoemakers and leather workers in Brazil so appreciate the tradition behind not only my craft, but similar handmade trades. My brand has a strong focus on quality, caring for the material and creating products that are durable and timeless that one day will become a piece of history. I just got back from New York and Brazil, travelling is always such a great source of inspiration, it's a way for me to refresh and come back better connected to my creative self. And Brazil is home, where I can touch base with my dad and discuss new designs and materials based on our family work."
"Next up, I'm really looking forward to going to Japan. Their craftsmanship is insane and I'm dying to get my hands on some of their leather tools. Also, the bike scene is really big over there so I would love to meet some people, and maybe do a Mutt Rideout."
What would be your advice for someone considering riding?
"Be patient, ride safe and buy a Mutt! All jokes aside, I've lost some important people in my life due to motorbike accidents, cannot stress enough how important having the right safety gear is. Respect the ride."
Ultimately, it's not just about reaching your destination, but also about the journey.
