Carve Your Own Path | Rob Holiday

For this months Carve Your Own Path, we caught Rob Holliday on his mean ol' Mutt machine at Mutt HQ in Birmingham.

Rob’s lyrics, guitars and vocal delivery have taken him through a variety of A-list acts, such as The Prodigy and Marilyn Manson, as well as his own bands along the way. His Birmingham roots held close to his heart from tour to tour, album to album. It’s always good to catch up with Rob at Mutt HQ, or in this case to have a natter and get his thoughts on bikes, music and more while he’s out on the road.

Rob’s currently out on tour with his band Sulpher. With a jam-packed mix of shows to support their latest album; “We're currently doing a load of shows in support of our current album ‘NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW’ which is out on German label SPV."

“Over the next month, we’re playing: November 22nd in London at the Garage supporting German band Die Krupp’s, the 29th in Cheltenham at ALTchelt, off to Berlin for 16th of January to play at the Sage Club, then back to the UK for a gig in Machynleth, Wales 8th of Feb, and The Station in Cannock for the 22nd.. Then we’re working on some new Sulpher music for our 3rd album.”

Rob’s passion for bikes is clear as day and it was a true insight into his motorcycling past when he ran us through his start on two-wheeled machines.

“I’ve loved bikes ever since I was a teenager. I had a brief spell on a dirt bike when I was 16, but then due to the death of a friend I stayed away for years. I finally decided to get a bike around 4 years ago and now I can’t stay off them.” His Mutt is the bike of the moment, with Rob describing how he found us and put his name on a Fat Sabbath straight away.

“I had seen the Mutts online and knew of Benny from his Boneshaker choppers days, I didn’t realise he was the man behind Mutt until I first got in touch about checking out the bikes a few years ago. I had an old ‘76 Harley frame with Honda shadow 750 engine in it prior to this Mutt, it was a little bigger and more chopper-like and it was extremely awkward to ride. So the Mutt is much more suitable for me currently”

Owning a bike (especially a Mutt) is all about the sense of community and comradery that a band of riders experience with each other. There’s never a dull moment out on the open road and Rob took us through his ideal scenario: “I love riding with a group of people, to me riding is absolute freedom and it makes you feel so alive. What I didn’t enjoy was my one wipeout, it totally fucked up my shoulder which I recently had operated on.”

With his career in such diverse genres, who would be more likely to jump on a bike and head out for a cruise of B-road blast. “We did Bloodstock Open-Air and Infest festival recently, both in the UK. I’d have to say they were my favorite shows this year with Sulpher. I saw Marilyn Manson on an episode of Ride with Norman Reedus- but then realised he was riding in a sidecar... so I would have to say for sure the late Keith Flint (R.I.P) he loved his bikes. Unfortunately, we never ended up going for a ride together before he passed away earlier this year.”

“When I’m away doing shows I tend to want to crash out and lie down and relax, sleeping is mostly what I do on the bus or the van. So I don’t have any plans to take the Mutt out on tour with me at the moment.”

With a busy tour schedule taking up Rob’s time at the moment, we’re looking forward to catching up with the main man when he’s back in Birmingham. “I swing by to see Benny, Sam and the guys quite often to check out what they’re up to... normally they’re up to NO GOOD!"

We’re trying to keep our heads down Rob...honest

If you like 'em aggressive, make sure you check out a Sulpher show towards the end of 2019, and stay tuned for more Carve Your Own Path's soon
